JOANI REID, MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, commenting on the Prime Minister’s announcement on children and social media earlier today (15 June) said:
“This announcement of serious action to protect children online, including a ban on social media for under-16s, is very welcome.
“There will be detail to work through, and it is important that this is done properly. But the direction of travel is right, and it shows the difference a government prepared to act can make.
“Since I was elected, I have pressed for firm action against the social media giants, including raising this directly with the Prime Minister. I am pleased that the pressure from parents and schools is now being heard.
“The task now is to turn this announcement into effective regulation with no unnecessary delay.
“My constituents want fast action, and so do I. Over the past year, people in East Kilbride have seen the terrible role social media can play in amplifying violence, intimidation and disorder in our communities. We cannot afford to wait.”
