JOANI REID MP, MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, is today (14 May) writing to the Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden calling for many more civil servant jobs to come to East Kilbride.
She said: “Pat McFadden has today made it clear that the government will be transferring up to 12,000 civil service jobs out of London.
“That is long overdue and a positive sign of the difference the new government is making. But is essential that East Kilbride, a town with a great record as a civil service hub, benefits.
“Only a few weeks ago, as I campaigned to keep international development jobs in East Kilbride, I made it clear to ministers that Scotland is more than just Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Our towns are a vital part of Scottish life and just as no one would mistake Preston for Manchester or Walsall for Birmingham and expect to get away it, there can be no space for thinking jobs in Glasgow are good enough for the folk of Lanarkshire.
“East Kilbride is already a base for the Foreign, Commonwealth and International Development Office and for His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. Both are obvious candidates for further job transfers, but it shouldn’t end there. Given our great heritage as a place for civil servants to work and thrive, our excellent range of affordable housing, our good schools and our setting in some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, it would be great to see other departments move jobs here too.”
